Publishing & Query Information

Beginning in 2026, The Upland Soul will publish select titles related to hunting, fishing, and traditional hook-and-bullet conservation across all media types. Our aim is to carry forward the legacy of outdoor writing — the kind once found in dog-eared paperbacks and old sporting journals — while bringing it into the 21st century with modern tools, design, and accessibility.

We’re embracing technology not to dilute tradition, but to preserve it. Through both digital and brick-and-mortar distribution, print-on-demand, and direct reader engagement, The Upland Soul is creating a platform where meaningful outdoor voices can thrive without compromise. Writers will have the freedom to tell honest stories and the opportunity to reach readers directly.

Every title we release will reflect our core values: literary quality, authenticity, and a deep respect for the landscapes and traditions that shape our pursuits. Whether through books, essays, or digital storytelling, our mission is to connect people to the timeless rhythms of the outdoors — and to ensure that those who carry that torch are rewarded, not forgotten.

We are currently accepting query letters for completed manuscripts ) in the following categories:

  • Upland Hunting
  • Big Game & Western Hunting
  • Wildlife Conservation
  • African Hunting
  • Fishing (key focus on fly fishing)
  • Select “road stories,” vignettes, and travelogues

We also accept novella-length manuscripts, collections of essays and — yes — anthologies. While primarily focused on nonfiction publications, we may also entertain certain works of fiction in the above categories (no short fiction).

Simultaneous submissions are more than fine.

Writers interested in contributing or publishing with The Upland Soul are encouraged to send a brief query letter outlining their project or idea through the contact form on our website. We’re especially interested in cultivating long-term relationships with authors who share our vision — collaborators who see writing not as content, but as craft, and who wish to grow with us as we build a modern home for the next generation of outdoor literature.

We try to be as responsive to correspondence as we can, but please allow up to a month for an initial reply. We look forward to reading your work.
