There’s a lot of bird hunting content online, of varying qualities. This list highlights our own favorite picks, most of whom we’ve been following for over a half-decade.

These picks aren’t packed with product placements or fake enthusiasm. They’re honest, thoughtful, and often funny, and always entertaining accounts of what it’s really like to chase a variety birds across the country. Some are old-school WordPress blogs. Others are YouTube channels. All are worth checking out.

If you’re looking for ways to beat the offseason blues (or make them worse, I guess), or to read or watch between hunts, start here.

Chukar Culture

Chukar Culture is one of the OG chukar hunting blogs, dating all the way back to 2013 (if not earlier), and is a personal favorite of The Upland Soul team.

Bob McMichael has the most handsome dogs on the internet, and hunts them hard in some of the best chukar country around (wherever that is…).

His writing stands on its own, even for people who don’t bird hunt. He writes about dogs, the changing landscape of the West, conservation, and more than a little philosophy… a unique voice amidst the shallow sea of hunting influencers we find ourselves awash in these days.

If you’re into hardcopy as well, he’s recently published a curated and expanded collection of his essays in a print book, available here on the Chukar Culture site.

Project Upland

Does we even need to include Project Upland on this list? We assume everyone reads Project Upland at this point, and/or follows them on social media and watches their beautifully-shot videos.

As with Eric Forrester below, they offer something for upland hunters of every ilk: pheasants, woodcock, sage grouse, and chukar, among many others.

As far as their written endeavors go, they publish a variety of interesting how-tos, species profiles, gun reviews, and hunting guides, as well as conservation-focused pieces and articles of “general interest” to the upland hunting and bird dog lifestyle.

Next time you have a few hours to lose down the rabbit hole, consider spending them on Project Upland.

The Reigning Chukar Champions

Here we go again – bird dogs and chukar. Chukar hunters are a special breed.

Larry Szurgot has hunted for over 55 years, and is the man behind The Reigning Chukar Champions, another long-running and beloved upland hunting blog. Flip through his hunt tales, and you’ll notice that it feels less like a blog and more like catching up with an old friend after a hunt.

He also does a great job at illustrating the human side of upland hunting: the deep-seated draw of working his two GSPs, the (ahem) passage of time and seasons, surgeries and getting older, and the “good old days” of bird hunting compared to whatever you’d call what we’re in now.

The Reigning Chukar Champions is one of our favorite upland hunting blogs, and you’ll see why when you spend some time on the site.

Eric Forrester

While not technically a blog, Eric Forrester’s YouTube channel deserves a place on any serious bird hunter’s shortlist of online content. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re following a pair of wirehairs through CRP, creeping into a covey rise, or swinging on a late-season rooster — this is as close as it gets without shouldering the shotgun yourself. Indeed, it can help up with those pre-season or post-season blues, especially since we’re only weeks away from the 2025-2026 upland season.

Forrester sets the gold standard for first-person upland hunting cinematography. We aren’t sure how he does it, but his GoPro footage is clear and aimed perfectly, and his editing aids the excellent footage that he gets, pausing to highlight covey flushes or other important things to note.

Whether you’re interested in Mearn’s in the desert oak scrub, ruffed grouse and woodcock in Wisconsin, or Huns and sharptails on the prairie, he likely has a video that will scratch whatever itch you may have.

Just as compelling are his dogs, a team of beautifully trained German wirehairs from his kennel, Ghost Point Wirehairs. If you’re a bird dog guy (and if you’re reading this, you probably are), he has some great dog work in all of his videos.

If you’re looking for great narration, coverage of just about every upland species in the U.S., and some of the best bird hunting cinematography on the internet, check out Eric Forrester’s YouTube channel.

The Best Upland Hunting Blogs on the Internet

Whether you’re in the middle of the season or counting down the days until it starts, these upland hunting blogs offer something to keep you connected—stories, lessons, and reminders of why we do this in the first place. If you know of other upland hunting blogs worth reading, drop us a line. We’re always looking for more good stuff to add to the list.
